About the Artist
Joel
Moskowitz was born in 1954 and raised in Long Beach, California,
one of eight children. He decided to be an artist at age nineteen,
and studied sculpture at Brandeis University (B.A., 1976).
After
graduating, he drew and painted the figure in an expressionist
style. Then he turned to portraying Jewish themes, as his
Jewish identity increased.
Joel's
media, for the most part, are those that are mixed with water
and applied to paper: ink, watercolors, acrylics, and gouache.
He developed a series of paintings of Hanukkah menorahs, and
then a series of Stars of David.
When
the artist learned that, in Judaism, letters, words, and text
are of paramount importance, he began to incorporate them
into his art, which led to the series of Hebrew blessings,
begun in 1995.
Now,
Joel is working to complete the series of Hebrew Blessings,
and writing a book of poetry to accompany the illustrations.
He
lives with his wife and two children in Sudbury, Massachusetts.
